Family Ties

Many of our patients struggle financially to make ends meet and care for their families. As their families grow this struggle can become even more difficult.

During prenatal care patients are offered the option of permanent contraception following delivery of their child in the form a bilateral tubal ligation (BTL). For women who do not have insurance, MIHS is able to subsidize the cost and only require a copay of $300. This copay goes toward the cost of the operating room, obstetrician, anesthesiologist, scrub tech, nursing staff, pathologist, and surgical tools.

There are many options for permanent contraception, but the postpartum BTL is the only option subsidized for the uninsured population. Unfortunately, when the time comes, some patients are unable to provide the copay for this procedure. Sadly, this means we are unable to perform the procedure and we often see the same patient with another pregnancy. If a woman has decided she has completed her childbearing but cannot afford the copay for a tubal, does it make sense for her to have another baby?

Reasons you should donate

All women should have the right to control their own fertility, whether they are insured or not.
Your donation of $300 could be the difference between a woman's ability to make decisions about her own fertility or not.
A woman's ability to control her fertility is her ability to control her life and achieve her goals.
Once a woman has completed childbearing, permanent contraception is a reliable, cost effective, and logical option. For a family that is already struggling to make ends meet the addition of more children will cause further financial hardship.
Insured women have multiple options for permanent contraception.
At MIHS we have done our best to facilitate and subsidize post partum tubal ligations for uninsured women. However, the $300 copay can be restrictive for our poorest patients.
This is your chance to give back to the community and support the poor.
Having your "tubes tied" is a minimally invasive procedure providing the standard of care.
Women are able to be discharge home hours after this procedure with lifelong contraception.
For women with complex medical conditions, pregnancy may be contraindicated.
An undesired pregnancy could put the woman's life at risk. These women should have the option of permanent contraception.
Permanent sterilization is a decision made by a patient.
This type of procedure is only performed on women that are absolutely certain they have completed their childbearing.
